Website auditing explained

A website audit is a bit like an MOT for a car - we look at your website - and inspect for a number of things on our checklist, then we give you the results - all in understandable terms. You can see where your website works well, and where it can be improved. Our advice and recommendations are 100% independent. We are website developers, but we're not going to foist our services on to you if your site needs some work. We will give you our report, and you can take this to any website developer (including your current one if you have one).

We conducted some initial research to see if there was such a need for an auditing service - and found there wasn't just a need for it, but by-and-large, the web design industry really isn't giving its customers clean, usable, accessible, search-engine friendly websites. Perhaps this is no surprise in an unregulated industry....but when you see what many web design houses are charging, you should be surprised.

Web design and development is a deceptive skill - you can start almost immediately with software tools like Dreamweaver and Photoshop and build your own website - you can be a 'web designer' in just a few hours. But even more deceptive is the feeling that after a few years of commercial work, a website developer 'has arrived' as a fully-fledged professional. A developer can be technically proficient and a good programmer, and have a portfolio of large and complex projects under his belt. Yet, many such developers will fail to deliver a website that ranks well in search engines, nor is accessible to the disabled, nor actually very usable to the website visitors!

The most important aspects are often overlooked by website developers: usability, accessibility, search engine optimization. They eschew these in favour of design and functionality requirements that give an impression of professionalism. It's compelling for a developer to wow their clients with slick design that may look good, but in the real world, is awkward to navigate for the website visitor. Usability, accessibility & search engine optimization are difficult to impress clients with - that is, until you talk about website traffic growth and ultimately rising sales.
